1998年7月，17岁的中国体操运动员，“跳马皇后”桑兰在美国参加第四届世界友好运动会跳马比赛试跳时，不幸脊椎重伤。中美各界立即给予救治、慰问和捐助，桑兰也表现了顽强与达观的崇高精神，深深打动了世界人民。
In July,1998,Sang Lan, a 17-year-old
Chinese gymnastic athlete,hurt on
the vertebra when she took part
in the horse-vaulting match of the
4th World Friendship Games held
in the United States. On hearing
the news, the Chinese and American
people in various circles threw
themselves in the work of treatment,comfort
and collection. The strong will
and philosophic attitude which Sang
Lan had shown during the treatment
deeply moved the people in the world.

Sang took part in the " American
Cup" match in Washington when she
was fifteen years old.

US President, went to hospital to
visit Sang. Carter said:"the
spirit which Miss Sang has shown
